Susan Carpenter commented on September, 1973: a reminiscence

Great story Scott! Reminds me a bit of when I hitch-hiked from across the country with my college roommate in Jan, 1972. The 70's indeed!

Thanks, Susan. Another friend who has taken the Christmas ride through Julian warned us of the same thing. Once we saw which way the weather was breaking there really wasn’t any question in our minds. We’re not really big risk takers or masochists.

And happy holidays yourself!

Glad to hear of your change in plans. I was on an ACA tour a few years ago and we got 8" of snow in Julian. Even though we stayed in town an extra day, the twisting and narrow Hwy 78 down to the desert was covered in black ice. Luckily, one of the other riders was able to get a friend with a pick-up truck to ferry us down to a lower, ice-free elevation. Happy Holidays

I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me to take a video of this show. We’ll be past this point again, and I’ll correct the omission.

It’s surprising, isn’t it? It makes a fine backdrop for this youngster.

I had to zoom in to see what was going on here.

That bill is something else!

I think we’re going to give the trolley a try as a way to skip through the city to the east. If we get the weather for it, we’ll take it to El Cajon and make a loop up to Alpine.

I’m so tunnel-visioned. I hadn’t looked at the map to see there’s a park at the border. I doubt it would be a very attractive outing in these days, but in any case it’s currently closed due to floooding.

That’s the right take on the brake pads, alright. I couldn’t quite believe they were really missing. I didn’t even know that could happen, but of course they’re just material, and things can break. I guess I should carry emergency spares and figure out how to install them.

So I should have a shot of triple distilled whisky when we hit a thousand? A shame that I hate whisky.

Oh, how great! It took me a minute to get this. I wish I’d thought of this first and done this intentionally.

Yikes. Not the best ride, but the murals in the video looked pretty cool.

And I'm glad the godwits were there to rinse away some of the sour filth left by ill-tempered man in the car.

And holy crap with the brake pads! Very fortunate that didn't happen before a long descent.
