Aarrggh!
4 years agoAnd, come to think of it, I’m not so sure I had the summer off - I may have just been between quarters, and taking summer classes. I can’t quite get the chronology right now. I’ll have to see if Carol remembers.
4 years agoCould be pretty bad. I heard from two different friends on organized Xmas rides through Julian, and both had problems with black ice. At my age, I injure fast and heal slow.
4 years agoI leave evidence of my visits wherever I go.
4 years agoThat explains the No Cowboys sign then. I was a bit taken aback by it, but it makes perfect sense now.
4 years agoI give up. Trump gets re-elected?
4 years agoI don’t recall the economics very well now, but I know I was going to school on the GI Bill, back when state colleges were virtually free compared to today’s horrible situation. I think maybe I was getting some sort of grant to help with living expenses too, but I don’t really remember. Also, I think Carol was still working through that summer, as a service rep for Ma Bell.
4 years agoThat's my kinda Christmas!
We had a picnic in Balboa Park near the reflection pond last year, and were the source great amusement and curiosity to a large group of Asian tourists, who stopped and took photos and the funny people sitting in the grass eating sandwiches. I realized they probably recognized me as The Singing Cycling Cowboy, so I jumped to my feet and offered to sign autographs and take selfies with them. But, for some reason they screamed and ran toward their bus. I chased them for a mile or so, singing Goodbye Old Paint at the top of my lungs.
Thanks. I appreciate all tributes to my art.
4 years agoAhh, what's the worst that could happen?
4 years agoAhhh, come on. How bad could the freezing mix have been? I mean, what's the worst that could happen? (I said, sitting here in my fully heated living room, drinking a fresh cup of coffee)
4 years agoI love remembering key people like Dennis, who planted that crazy distance cycling idea in your head. What a great adventure, and how cool that you and Alan made it to Salem!
For me it was my friend Jean's dad who suggested that it's easy to ride more than a few blocks. I don't remember how far we rode but I was on my yellow Free Spirit from Sears. Freedom!! Later I rode my brother-in-law's old Schwinn Varsity, which was way too big for me .. but I was convinced that it was much faster than the Free Spirit.
I hope you find a photo of your Peugot. Would love to see it!
Thanks for sharing these great memories that bring back fond memories of my own.
Wow, that's massive. Imagine having to pilot that beast.
4 years agoWeren't you just a little tempted to stick your elbow out just as the speedy power board guys went by?

This road's surface and little hills are exactly like the roads we're experiencing here in Thailand.
