Lycra and the other Lake: Mentone to Melbourne City

Coming into Melbourne around Port Phillip Bay on a Saturday morning was an interesting experience.

We discovered that from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings, road lanes are closed to cars and dedicated to cycling.

Before we knew it, we were merging, complete with panniers, into a stream of pelotons.

All good fun, and in no time we were in Albert Park on the shore of the lake.

The Lake-to-Lake route then is very doable. We made it relatively easily with 15 days cycling which covered a bit more than 1000 km.

From Albert Park Lake we found Sth Melbourne Market and then Southbank in the city where we met family for a couple of rest days in Melbourne.

Our first Melbourne cafe. One or two bikes.

This one looked expensive. I can't see where pannier racks would attach though.

A must take photo. Brighton beach houses.

The Bay Trail is very good. Will (on the left) however is determined to keep on the rough-riders route. John sticks with the sealed surface.

John is still prepared for magpie attacks from above. This is the classic pose of a cycle tourist prepared for incoming magpies. There were none today which was the exception. Most days we were stukaed at least twice per day.

The triumphant trio at Albert Park Lake at the end of the Canberra to Melbourne ride. They pause briefly for a photo before heading to what Melbourne does best.John, in the centre, is already plotting the next tour. It will be a bit further away than Melbourne. Much further. It will involve sand, corrugations, crocs, lean rations and more logistics than Napoleon needed to cross Russia. From left to right: Graham, John, Will.

One of my other favourite photos. A proper long-black coffee. I cycled 15 days and 1050 km to get coffee this good.
