Day 31: Miyajima to Iwakuni: Another short day, to another landmark sight
This was another short day, to allow us the morning for further explorations of Miyajima. We left Miyajima in early afternoon, with only a 20 mile ride along the coast to Iwakuni ahead of us - virtually another rest day. We didn't find Iwakuni itself is particularly interesting, other than for its famous Kintai-kyo Bridge. This beautiful wooden bridge, built entirely of wood and wood fastenings, consists of a series of five steep arches hop-scotching across the Nishikigawa. It was completely rebuilt after its destruction in 1950, keeping its original design and choice of materials. With the small Iwakuni castle crowning the ridge on the opposite bank, it makes a very colorful sight. According to the travel literature, the bridge was for the use of samurai only - leaving lesser mortals to cross the river by boat.
