Rethymnon - Cycling Greece, Part 2 - CycleBlaze

May 7, 2012

Rethymnon

From Chania we packed up and bore east to Rethymnon, following a meandering route through Aptera, Kalives, Georgioupoli and Episkopi that avoided the busy coastal highway but paid for it by taking us up and down again over a series of three ridges - the first 1500 feet, and the next two about 1000 each. Great weather and more spectacular scenery rewarded us for cycling that was as strenuous as the day before.

Rethymnon is a beautiful small city, and one we enjoyed as much as Chania. We were really glad to have planned for a second night here to allow us more time to wander through its colorful streets and enjoy its sites.

We splurged here, enjoying a terrific gourmet meal at Avli. Well, actually we enjoyed it twice - it was good enough that we splurged there again the next night.

Rethymnon's waterfront is as lovely as Chania's. Is all of Crete this beautiful?

At the Venetian fortress, Rethymnon. At the rear is a Turkish mosque, converted by them from a Christian church.
