Day 75: Fort Frances to Quetico Provincial Park

I spoke to a gentleman in the campground this morning. He offered some advice for the road ahead. Most notably, he mentioned the Bunnell Campground in Atikokan. It's 4 km from the road and has showers and free wifi. It sounds like a good set up, but I did not stay there so I cannot verify.

I met Adam and Kate today. They started their trip in PEI and are planning on being in Vancouver in September. They then plan on heading south and being in California by November. We exchanged information about the road ahead. They enjoyed staying at the residences at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. They also stayed by the information centre in White River (by the Winnie the Pooh statue). It's free, but you have to pay at the truck stop for showers. They also recommended staying at the Velorution bike shop in Sioux Ste. Marie. Camping is free and it is a mecca for touring cyclists.

Earlier in the day I had passed a backpack by the side of the road. As I looked down, I saw a bearded individual with hiking boots. I later pieced together from Adam and Kate's journal that it was Simon Wallis. A musician who is hiking across Canada.

I stayed at the Quetico Provincial Park Campground ($31.50) on a nice spot by the lake. I stocked up on food at the gas station/grocery store across the road. They were kind enough to provide me with a couple of bottles of water that they had frozen to help keep things cool.

The weather today was decent. A bit cool - likely 19 or 20 degrees C - a nice temperature for cycling. Most importantly, there was a good tailwind. It does not look I will be so lucky over the next few days. It is supposed to get down to 4 degrees C overnight with rain on Friday and Saturday.
