As we step out of our room and look left - this is what we see. Thirty-nine steps? One hundred steps? A million steps? -- Dubrovnik, Croatia

Not only was there a rubber ducky store within the walls of the city, but there was another one. What am I missing here? -- Dubrovnik, Croatia

Jacquie GaudetWe saw one in central Venice too. Maybe it’s a craze that hasn’t made it to Canada (except around Whistler’s Peak Chairlift).

Brent IrvineTo Jacquie GaudetWe were baffled wondering if they are for a wasteful non-environment-friendly release into the sea at some kind of odd festival.

Brent IrvineWhat initially came to my mind was illicit activity, and on one reddit post suggested the same.

Just below the walls of the entrance by the fountain is this little pebbly beach where there were very few people. A beautiful little spot. On a hot day it would have been nice to dip toes into the water. -- Dubrovnik, Croatia

Just across from the little beach is the path up to the fortress. Amazing views of the Old City and up into the scary looking hills where we will be cycling tomorrow. -- Dubrovnik, Croatia

Near the fortress into yet another beautiful little cove. Prates must have loved it here. -- Dubrovnik, Croatia

An icon of the city, Ivo Grbić was an artist and historian for the city and area. His home was a treasure trove of his art and cultural artifacts of the region. In 1991 and 1992 the Montenegrin and Serbian bombing campaigns devastated his home destroying all of the contents when several incendiary bombs crashed through the roof. He tried to save what he could with buckets of water but was unsuccessful. War is plain and simply evil. -- Dubrovnik, Croatia

SOME more exploring of Old Dubrovnik today and some preparing for riding our first real, and likely tough, cycling day tomorrow.

My inner alarm went off again around 8 am but I just lounged and drifted around online until it was time to get up and eat. Breakfast was in our apartment - a meat and cheese sandwich, blueberry nectar (juice), and some packaged latte (it was pretty tasty). Then out into the city to explore up and down the back streets, out of the walls to the adjacent rocky beach which was surprisingly un-peopled despite the humanity all about otherwise, then along the cliffs along the water before wandering back into the city walls.

Returning to the same little grocery store, we picked up things for tonight's dinner and tomorrow morning's breakfast before the cycling starts in earnest. Being used to eating out on every meal while on cycling trips, this is a change for me, but it is surprisingly pleasant. It is fun to see what the local supermarkets offer. Furthermore, the restaurant prices within the old city and nearby are pretty high so we'll wait for local fare once we are way from the majpr tourist areas.

It had warmed up quite a bit and we had walked around a lot so it was time to return to the room for an afternoon siesta. There was no real siesta - I was re-arranging my gear in my pannier for tomorrow's ride. It looks like rain is coming so I want to be sure to have my rain gear at the ready for when/if it comes.

Today's ride: 5 km (3 miles)
Total: 34 km (21 miles)
